Mistakes do happen

Oops, we all make mistakes. The other week I received a recommendation via a telephone message following my presentation at the VELG conference. The call came through whilst I was on the phone, and went  straight to message bank. Having only taken down half the number I needed to replay it, and inadvertently pressed the delete button. Try as I might, I could NOT get the message back again. Doh!

I even tried to call my telco, and spent the following 50 minutes on the phone, trying to get the callers number or the message to be replayed to me. Nothing “due to privacy reasons…blah, blah”.

My ethics of customer service are screaming at me, however I guess we are all human.

Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes.

Confucius (551 BC – 479 BC)

So I looked up the internet for some enlightenment and came up with the following:

One of the greatest lesson you will learn from making mistakes is forgiveness. With every mistake that you’ll make, you will learn how important it is to forgive yourself and many of the people around you. You will understand that you are not perfect and that perfection doesn’t really exist, only our intentions of doing our best. And who wants to be perfect anyways? Perfection leaves no room for improvement.

The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that that situation is over, you cannot move forward. ~ Steve Maraboli

So with the aim of sharing my enlightenment I considered the recent release from ASQA that says that the Audits of existing RTOs in the 12 months to 30 June 2013 achieved the following from their audits:

Initial audit
• 19.6% fully compliant at the initial audit
• 80.4% have at least one non-compliance at the initial audit
After rectification
• 72.9% fully compliant
• 27.1% have at least one non-compliance following rectification

is this reflective that existing RTOs are happy to make mistakes and learn from them?

  1. In all honesty to err is human.
Depending upon the number of qualifications on one’s scope, type of industry/business/service the credential is required for, then to come through first time, without any none compliance reflects well on that RTO.
And as they say there is always room for improvement (i.e. the premise of the SNR’s is continuous improvement) so yes I think RTO’s are “happy” to learn from their mistakes.

    1. Great to hear from you Derek, yes I tend to agree, we do learn from our mistakes. We can be told in a number of ways, yet the best learning sometimes comes from our mistakes; especially when you take ownership of it yourself. If you start blaming other people you can distance yourself from any possible lesson. I totally believe that people who admit their mistakes easily allow their progress to accelerate.
