A new guide to help employers and workers prevent workplace violence has recently been developed by SafeWork SA.
The guide, Preventing and responding to work-related violence was developed by SafeWork SA with the help of workplace safety authorities from around Australia.
The guide provides information on the following classification of workplace violence:
- External violence– – perpetrated by someone from outside the workplace and usually involving people working alone or in isolation. Public transport workers, security personnel and workers within the retail, hospitality and cash-handling industries are the most vulnerable.
- Service-related violence – where workers are providing a service to clients, customers, patients or people within the justice system. This most commonly affects workers in healthcare, aged care, disability services, youth services, education and law enforcement
From 2011 to 2012, 203 workers were assaulted; 246 harassed or bullied; and 98 were exposed to workplace violence. More than 4,000 incidents where nursing staff required security assistance because of threats to their safety were recorded in South Australian hospitals.
According to statistics, more than 70% of all armed robbers happen in retail outlets.
The guide can be downloaded from the SafeWork SA website.
