Making the assessment decision

As an assessor you will need to compare the candidate’s evidence against the specific criteria and make an overall judgement of competence.


Judgement may be defined as:


“The process of comparing sufficient evidence of a candidates achievements with the required performance criteria and making a decision as to whether the necessary competence has been demonstrated or not.” (Rumsey, 1994. p.9)


Judgements need to be made as objectively as possible by detailing the form and type of evidence required, the criteria to be used when assessing and any rules about decision-making. These rules may outline which combinations of evidence will be accepted and which ones will be considered incomplete.


Once you have gathered all the required evidence you need to consider and evaluate it to make your decision on the candidate’s competence. Assessors often worry about how much evidence is enough to prove competency. You need to be certain the evidence collected covers the identified evidence requirements.
