To develop an effective learning and assessment program based on a Training Package, it is first necessary to ‘unpack’ the Training Package. I have been developing learning and assessment strategies with clients recently and wanted to discuss some of the key areas.
Unpacking the Training package provides trainers and assessors with detailed knowledge of the Training Package’s components, helps to identify how the various units of competency relate to each other, which then enables the development of effective learning and assessment strategies.
Unpacking results in an understanding of the:
- Units of competency and their delivery and assessment requirements;
- Relationship between individual units of competency, to aid the planning of delivery and assessment;
- Any requirements of the training package for your particular qualification;
- Pathways into and from the qualification;
- Relationship between the qualification and its occupational outcome.
Once you have developed the learning and assessment strategy you can adapt it to particular client groups and their specific requirements. Remember one strategy usually doesn’t fit all, so have strategies developed for client specific requirements.
