If you manage an RTO, or an RTOs compliance you will understand just how important a systematic process is to your business. To effectively manage compliance, you need to systematically implement, monitor and adjust the RTO’s mechanisms to ensure performance against the RTO Standards. Implementing an internal audit program allows you to produce the evidence required to manage and demonstrate compliance, and to continuously improve your training products. It provides you with a system to monior and adjust where needed.
Having just visited an RTO in NSW I was advised that my client had asked her compliance person several times over the past 12 months to conduct an internal audit. None were forth coming. The response she got time and time again was “you are OK”. My client, the RTO CEO, didn’t feel right and so she decided to do her own investigation and consulted RTO Mentor. Needless to say there are several areas that need to have actions applied to meet compliance.
One of the main factors that prevent RTOs using internal audits to manage compliance is the lack of knowledge and skills of its staff members in conducting internal audits against the Standards for RTOs. Another reason is fear. Fear of uncovering something they haven’t applied.
Too bogged down.
The reality is, as a compliance officer, or manager, you often get so bogged down in the day-to-day business of running an RTO that sometimes compliance slips through the cracks. There also is the fact that you become so deeply involved in the compliance that you can’t see the wood for the trees. Meaning you can’t see areas that you are non-complaint in. this is why it is important to get a view point from someone outside of the RTO. Someone who has experience in looking at your RTO through the eyes of an auditor. Someone who can also mentor you in meeting compliance, and provide you with workable solutions that meet your client’s needs.
