Training and Assessment Strategies
The VET system has a huge impact on more than 1.2 million workers. This figure represents more than 13 per cent of the entire Australian workforce. As an RTO it is your RTO Training and Assessment Strategies that play a huge factor in assisting these people within the workforce.
Whether your courses are 1-day or over 12 months or longer the way you develop, implement, and monitor your training and assessment strategies impacts each of these workers. To be successful in getting clients, your strategies need to meet client demand. They also need to show practices that meet the training package requirements.
Content
Your Training and Assessment Strategies you need to include certain evidence to support why you do what you do. This includes evidence that you have sought and incorporated input into your training and assessment strategies from relevant industry stakeholders. This is called industry consultation. Refer to RTO Standard 1.5, 1.6.
So often I am asked “How do we do that?”. It means you need to talk to people within industry who are likely to send their staff to you for training. Ask them what they want, how they would like the training to be conducted, for example over 2 x 1/2 days or 1 day
Amount of training
The RTO’s training and assessment strategies and practices must include the amount of training required for the learner
to gain the competencies. This is specified in the relevant training package or VET accredited course. The amount of training will vary
depending on the existing skills and knowledge of the learner. The mode of delivery and any work placement arrangements will also impact how you set the course up.
Continuous Improvement
Your training and assessment strategy should not be ‘static’. Update your strategies regularly and include information from reviews with your industry engagement activities, which relate to the ongoing monitoring of training and assessment strategies and practices.
It needs to be regularly updated to take into account changes in industry technology and techniques, legislation, and the training package itself. Include reviews of your resources, as sometimes the availability of them within your RTO can vary.
RTOs are required to have all resources available to deliver every training product on your RTO’s scope of registration—whether you are currently delivering it or not. These resources must comply with any specific requirements in the training package or accredited course. The quantity of these resources required will depend on how many learners you are delivering to, or intend to deliver to. Your training and assessment strategies should include guidance on the level of resources needed per learner or per group.
Marketing
Remember if you change your Training and Assessment Strategies then make sure it is reflected in the marketing. The strategy must also be consistent with the advertising and other material you provide to prospective learners.
