Implementing effective RTO systems

So often, when visiting RTOs for the first time, I ask about the RTO systems. I usually get a response along the lines of “Yes, we have all of that in place”. When I ask to see them a get a beautiful book or manual that looks brand new (straight off the printer) that was filed away in a dark corner of the someone’s office. This document, usually has never been opened!

The book is full of policies and procedures and usually ahs some great ways of doing business, however… no one knows about them, no one has read them since the auditor perused them for initial registration….

The simplest and most effective means of implementing effective RTO systems and  measures, that meet or exceed your RTO obligations, is to commence or review of the documentation to see if it actually makes sense for your RTO.

  •  Firstly, managers and businesses need to have a current and continuous understanding or knowledge of all the relevant legislation and laws.
  • All application of the procedures and compliance should be relevant to the business and business operations.
  • Appropriate and adequate resources then need to be implemented to support the process and plan.
  • There should be a singular process in place to register your students, consider course requirements, implement training, record information and ensure they are in use.
  • Compliance to the overall policy, procedures and processes is required in order to be successful and effective.
  • All elements must then be verified to ensure they are not merely audit and checklist worthy but not applied and in use.
  • Then you will need to set a plan to review them on a regular basis, to ensure if changes have been made, that you capture these changes.
