I was playing a game of chess on the weekend with a friend. Now let me say that the last time I played chess was with my father many, many years ago. So needless to say, I was a bit rusty. But I was intent on playing my game as I do life and my business.
It got me thinking about the business of running an RTO and how similar it is to a game of chess. I found that the strategies I was using, are not unlike the strategies you need to use when running a business. There were similarities as well in the players; the king being your auditor, or ultimate compliance management.
The Pawns are your most weakest pieces, could they be your trainers, someone you sacrifice to gain maximum impact from someone else?
The queen, is your queen the most powerful player on the board? Someone to revered; perhaps your compliance guru?
Thinking about chess, how one move from your opponent can change everything, reminded me of the frustration of the ever-changing training packages and having to make changes to the training and assessment material (and apply for a change of scope). Don’t get me wrong, I know they are needed. And certainly remember when training package didn’t change at all…. secretly, I still am not sure which one was better!
Then there is the tendency to make rash moves when cornered. Much as people do in real life, or their RTO….panic when they hear the auditor is coming.
Later, after the game had been well and truly won (by me) looking at the internet on “how to play chess”, so I could improve my skills; it reminded me of the conversations that happen around RTOs, can we do this, can we do that? There are a myriad of suggestions out there.
What is the best strategy……..?
Don’t get me wrong, I love the internet, and the interactions we have . life has moved so far in the past few years with the power of social media and all of our gadgets we use to access it.
Seriously, there is so much information out there, that you could do it all yourself and have a complaint RTO. Or you could ask for help, and have someone come and coach you through the process. Someone with a wealth of experience.
Back to chess, and your RTO.
Are you prepared to make a move that sacrifices your pawns, to the detriment of your compliance? Do you have a queen strategically placed?
