Literacy and Numeracy assessment for Indigenous Learners

For my RTO followers who train and assess indigenous learners there are new products available for sale from the Indigenous Lead Centre.

These Australian Core Skills (ACS) Indicator tools have been designed for teachers, trainers and/or language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) practitioners working with Indigenous learners. The activities have been contextualised and designed in plain English with appropriate Indigenous images and activities.

While many LLN and Core Skills Indicators are applicable to specific industry training needs, these tools offer generic activities to check the core skills of Indigenous learners enrolled in, or about to enrol in Vocational Education and Training (VET).

The purpose of the indicator tools are to:

  • Check an individual’s core skills strengths and weaknesses
  • Identify any core skill gaps an individual may have
  • Compare individual skills and qualification requirements to reduce the possibility of course failure
  • Identify and address workplace skill deficits
  • Highlight whether an individual possesses the necessary learning skills required for formal VET courses.

Identified core skill gaps or weakness can then be addressed in a number of ways including:

  • Bridging courses
  • LLN support
  • Return to study programs
  • Additional learning activities to build core skills
  • Customised learning resources
  • Tailored teaching strategies
  • Adjusted assessment strategies.

This resource contains activities and marking guides for Learning, Reading, Writing, Oral Communication and Numeracy and it has been developed to allow a trainer to check only those aspects that are relevant to the vocational training being undertaken by an individual.

You will find these resources under ACSF in http://www.tnqit.indigenouslead.tafe.qld.gov.au/index.html
