Discussions with other trainers and assessors show there is so much variety happening when it comes to evidence gathering for assessments.
That is what VET is all about I hear you saying; but how can you rely on this evidence to make a total picture of competence?
As you know the AQTF requires you to undertake validation and if they are done well then you know you are assessing and collecting enough evidence.
Good practice factors to consider:
- Use ‘holistic’ or ‘integrated’ assessments that can be used for a group of related units of competency.
- Ensure you read and map your assessment to the whole unit including Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit.
- Plan your assessments to work tasks.
- Do assessments over time. Allow workplace practise in between.
- Set a minimum standard of at least two assessment tools or methods.
- Negotiate with employers and learners to determine what evidence is already available, or to develop appropriate assessment methods.
- If project work is undertaken the project may provide evidence of competency for more than one candidate. In this situation a personal statement, additional questioning or third-party report may be required to confirm an individual’s contribution and performance.
- Don’t rely on one-method-fits all approach.
A good document to read is Guide for developing assessment tools.
Enjoy developing.
