Providing reasonable adjustment in assessment tools

Do your assessment tools allow for learners to be assessed differently from others in the group? Do they allow a learner to respond orally rather than in writing, or allow more time to practice, or use a particular resource.

Do you have a definition of reasonable adjustment for your assessors to check? – are there instructions to the assessor to say what they can and cannot do? Or a box to tick to say how the assessment was conducted?

Whilst working with many RTOs who have learners who need the above I see so many tools that don’t make space for the reasonable adjustments.

Reasonable adjustment is when you allow the person to match the performance in another way; it isn’t reasonable adjustment if it doesn’t meet the standard.

Do your tools allow for flexibility, or fairness? Fairness has no bias or doesn’t disadvantage anyone.

Remember to keep the integrity of your materials so you know that people who you issue a testamur to have the knowledge, experience and expertise to understand the processes time and time again.

Take a look at the content you are producing (assessment tools and training) and see if you are including any of the above. See if you can squeeze in some extra criteria to make your tools really pass the rigor test.

And if there are some that need massaging, then schedule some time to review with another assessor. If changes are made, make sure they are in line with your reasonable adjustment policy.

Then don’t forget to update your continuous improvement log.
