In the past VET providers have not had to place emphasise on the above standard, so generally it isn’t done well across the board.
Industry consultation can occur in different forms I have found that face to face meetings are the most successful and can be beneficial in eliciting very helpful and often surprising feedback. It doesn’t matter if you are planning to put a new qualification / course on scope or you are improving your existing course/ qualification. Meeting with your intended industry is a beneficial way of developing training that actually meets their needs. You never know, you might even find a new client who raves about you to others!
The following are some examples of how you can consult with your industry and collect evidence:
- Contact industry skills councils for current information on the relevant industry.
- Get feedback from a couple of individuals working in the industry.
- Meet with your core clients and develop solid working relationships with them
- Visit clients them onsite
- Call them
- Stop by the review the training and assessment process when conducting onsite visits with trainees
- Invite industry representatives in to a consultation meeting at your RTO
- Create training and assessment material specific to each client/site.
- Validate your strategies and assessment tools with your clients
- Become a member of an industry association
You need to record these meetings, and what was discovered, how you made improvements and how you met industry needs. If any corrections/ adjustments are made to the documents you will need to document this at the end of the training and assessment strategy with an action plan. Remember to file away the changes you made. Also record it on the strategy document to show you have consulted, who you talked to, and when.
The key is to have structure to your approach and record the outcomes of your consultations.
Remember to record this information somewhere that is relevant and easily found should you need to refer back to it.
