Trainers and assessors to hold LLN unit as core in the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

Requirements for all vocational trainers and assessors are changing to make sure they have the skills and knowledge to support the development of adult learners’ language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills. IBSA confirms that by July 2014 the unit TAELLN401A Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills will become part of the core of TAE40110 and all new and existing trainers will need to hold or demonstrate equivalent competency to this unit.

This action is in response to the Australian Government’s strategy to address LLN issues using the VET system and VET professionals to deliver the vital LLN training. IBSA, as the ‘owner’ of the Training and Education Training Package, the VET system at large and VET professionals in general represent the most effective conduit through which the issues around LLN will be addressed.

This change means that work is required to up-skill those who are not competent in the required LLN skills.

In addition, VET practitioners across the VET system will need to establish either through appropriate development activities or through the development of the necessary portfolio that they meet the current National Skills Standards Council (NSSC) requirement for trainers and assessors, specifically that “trainers must at a minimum hold … Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or demonstrate equivalence of competencies” in respect of the LLN competency Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills.

IBSA encourages RTOs and VET practitioners to be fully prepared for the changes. IBSA has been funded by the Australian Government to develop guides to assist RTOs and VET practitioners. In addition, two jurisdictions have provided an insight into activities in their environments that are framed to respond to these needs.
